Why "Mid Tree"
In the beginning was a tree that brought us death,
In the end a heavenly tree yields life eternal,
In the middle stands a tree,
A tree that gives us access.
The name Mid Tree comes from a Christ-centered perspective on the grand narrative of scripture:
In Genesis 2:9 & 3:22 we see that God provided a way for his creation to live in eternal paradise with him by eating of the Tree of Life. However, we chose a different way and ate from a different tree. That sin caused us to be driven from the presence of God and the provision he provided. But God would still provide a way for his children and interestingly enough he would do this through a tree. All seemed hopeless for Adam, Eve, and the human race. Yet God’s love extended, not through a tree that bore fruit, but a tree that bore wrath. On this tree which was fashioned into a cross (Acts 5:30-31) Jesus bore the wrath of God which we deserved. God welcomes those who put their trust in Jesus and his death in our place, into a paradise that will never end. And in this paradise we find a very familiar tree (Rev. 22:2,14). We ate from a tree that brought us death though one was provided that offered life, and when we did not choose life Jesus placed himself on a tree that we might have access the the Father, as he always intended.
And so, between the tree we chose in the garden of Genesis and the tree of life in Revelation we find a tree placed in the middle of redemptive history, a Mid Tree, and upon this tree God placed his son, that all who trust on his death upon that tree will have eternal life.
This tree has no root, yet it stands eternally,
It stood in darkness, yet puts forth light,
Was intended for death, yet brings forth life,
Has neither leaf nor fruit, yet shelters and feeds,
Was made to separate, yet draws us together,
Upon this tree our hope is built.
(1 Peter 2:24)
