When God Waits | David Blanchard | John 11 | July 26th, 2026

Sometimes the most painful spiritual question is also the most practical one: if God loves us and has power, why does he wait while things fall apart? John 11 does not dodge that tension. It names it, sits in it, and then shows us what Jesus is like when death and grief take over a room.

We follow the story of Lazarus, Mary, and Martha, where Jesus hears the desperate news and delays anyway. That single choice forces us to rethink what we assume about God’s timing, God’s love, and what it means to trust when the outcome is not in our hands. Along the way, we talk about Christian grief, lament with hope, and why “God is in control” can be true while still being a terrible bandage over real wounds.

Then the scene turns and we watch Jesus do two things that belong together: he weeps and he acts. We dig into the shock of “Jesus wept,” his righteous anger at what sin and death have done to creation, and the boldness of praying for healing without pretending we control God. Finally, we land on the claim at the heart of the Gospel of John: “I am the resurrection and the life.” Resurrection is not just an event we want, it is a Person we either trust or reject.
